Excerpt:
“I’m warning you. You have until the count
of five to show yourself before I…”
“Before you what, exactly?” a male voice
responded confirming my suspicions, but the suddenness and close proximity
threw me off. I stumbled over something hard and toppled backwards.
He caught me before my head hit the hard
packed ground. “Careful now, sweetheart.” His voice was deep with a rough raspy
edge to it. I looked up to thank him and met the most gorgeous pair of eyes I’d
ever seen.
Mossy-green eyes held me captive. Both
beautiful and frightening they looked far to pretty to be normal human eyes.
The otherness of them gave it away before he could confirm it. He was a
vampire. Adding to my confusion, there was no malice in his tone. The opposite
in fact, his words were calm and soothing. Though dimly lit, I could make out
his features and the quirky smile across his face as he helped me stand again.
Not exactly what I had expected from someone rummaging through my family’s barn
late at night.
Dumbfounded, I stared too long without
saying anything, and it was he who broke the awkward silence.
“You know, they have these new things
called Imagers. You could just freeze mine, put it in a frame, and stare at
that all day.”
“I’d much rather stare at the real thing.”
I’d always spoke freely… whatever came to mind, consequences be damned, but at
that moment, what had escaped my lips had me turning beet red.
“I’d let you stare at me all day, but
that’s when I get my beauty rest.” After flashing me a very toothy grin, he
dusted some of the hay off my shirt and pants. “How about you stare for the
rest of the night instead?”
I was too worked up, processing what I’d
just seen to notice he was flirting back at me. He was a vampire. A real, live,
vampire. Were vampires living? That was beside the point. There was a vampire
standing scant inches away from me and for the life of me I had no idea what to
do about it. Sure, I’d been schooled on proper procedure. Keep them talking
while you tapped the emergency code on your bracer, but that would bring the
patrols and a lot of attention, quite the opposite of the nice quiet evening I
had planned. On the other hand, there was a vampire here. A real one, talking
to me. I could pick his brain for hours about what life was like for him. I’d
read so many stories.
“Uh… are you okay?” he began to say, and I realized I was still
standing there, jaw halfway to the floor
He’s
a vampire! That was all my brain would process. I
was stuck, and needed to shake the shock of it from my system before I ended up
a blathering idiot. Wake up, Mira!
“Oh. Yeah. Who the hell are you? And what are you doing in my barn?” That was
not what I’d meant to say but the disconnect between my mouth and brain was too
much to overcome at that moment.
