“It’s been ten years now, and I’m ready for some answers. I want the truth.” She shifted in her chair and leaned in a little. “Was there even a car accident? That’s what your dad and the paramedics told my mom, but when I talked to the doctor who treated me, he said he had never seen this kind of crushing injury from a car accident.” Lilly pointed to her left leg.
“Yes and no. We were run off the road by Evelyn and the other elders.”
“The black Blazer?”
“Yes, but we weren’t seriously injured. Your leg was mangled by one of the elders who pulled you out of the car. He crushed your leg when you resisted.” Lilly had a flash of memory. There was a man holding her. He told her to stop kicking him. Then the sickening sound of bone being crushed. But it was something she felt removed from, like watching it in a movie. It didn’t seem like it had happened to her.
“I have a memory of your blood on my hands,” she said. “If you weren’t injured in the car accident, why were you bleeding?”
“All Sentrians have a chip implanted in their heads when they are born. Most of the time they lay dormant in a person’s body. The chip is only activated when the government needs to locate somebody. I was bleeding because you were trying to cut it out.”
“Yeah. I think I remember.” Lilly concentrated. An image flashed in her mind of her holding a knife with blood on her hands. There was something else. “What about the telephone pole? In my dreams, I always see one.”
Charlie looked down at his hands. “When it looked like we weren’t going to be able to evade them, you told me to ram the car into a telephone pole. Evelyn, however, figured out what I was doing, and that’s when she and the elders ran us off the road.”
Lilly blinked. It was hard to imagine they had been so desperate as to attempt suicide by head-on collision, but, then again, when she thought he was gone forever, she had tried to overdose on sleeping pills. They had both been so young. Back then, she thought she could never live without him. Now she knew differently. “I do remember something, but I don’t understand. You were calling to me, and you kept telling me to look at you. Then you told me you were sorry. Why?”
Charlie paused for a moment. “I was trying to distract you. One of the elders had his hands on your throat. He was just waiting for Evelyn’s order to break your neck. I didn’t want you to see it coming.”
“Oh.” She was quiet for a moment. “So why didn’t they? What happened to change their minds?”
“The other elder thought it best if they didn’t kill you. He thought it might cause complications for the mission. His objection saved your life. They put us both in a sleep state. I was taken back to Sentria. My dad and the elder that saved your life staged a car accident and called for medical help. They pretended they had been driving along when they came upon the accident.” Charlie paused and reached out his hand to hold Lilly’s. “I’m so sorry. You didn’t deserve any of this. If I could change things, I would.”
With hesitation, Lilly pulled her hand away from his warm touch. “Well, what’s done is done. I mean it’s not like we can go back and get a second chance.”
“No, we can’t go back, but now we have a second chance.” Charlie stood up and approached her chair. He crouched down in front of her. “Liliana, I love you. Now more than ever. And we can finally get married and be together forever.”
Lilly’s heart was hammering in her chest. This was exactly what she did not want to hear. She exhaled and shook her head. “Charlie, it’s not that easy. Maybe things turned out this way for a reason. I know you believe we are supposed to be together, but with everything that’s happened, it seems pretty clear that we were never meant to be.”
“No, that’s not true. You were created for me, and I was created for you. I understand that you’re upset with me. You don’t trust me; that’s okay. I will have to earn your trust.”
“I was upset with you, not anymore. And it’s not just about trust. It’s been a long time. I’m not the same person I was. I’ve changed.”
“I understand it will take time. I can wait.”
“I wouldn’t hold my breath if I were you.” She rose and ambled over to the door. “I’m tired. I really need to get some sleep.”
“Okay, I’ll go. But I’m not giving up on you, Liliana.”
“Take care of yourself, Charlie. I wish you well.” Lilly shut the door and went to her bedroom. Finally, she had all the answers she had wanted for so long. She was surprised that it didn’t give her the closure she always hoped it would.
Lilly lay down but knew she wasn’t going to fall asleep anytime soon. She pulled out her journal to write. In the past she had always addressed her journal entries to Charlie, but now it didn’t seem quite appropriate. She wrote “Dear Diary,” but then scratched it out. “Dear Diary” sounded like something a twelve-year-old would write. She finally began with the date and left it at that.
August 20, 1999
I kissed Zach.
Charlie’s back.
Then she paused, not sure what else to say. Lilly looked over the two sentences. What was left unsaid could fill ten journals.

Chapter 12: Part I
* * * Symone * * *

Chaos spun around me and my heart hammered inside my chest. There were too many hostages to count. Several were scurrying out of the hole Bryan had made with his blue fire.
We had to get the refugees to the ships that were waiting above the surface. Polars were coming out of the woodwork. It was getting difficult to keep the Kadanans who didn’t know how to fight out of harm’s way. Nile was yelling, trying to direct the hostages to continue out of the opening. At the same time, he was shooting his laser. Glancing to my side, I saw Bryan and Shi getting ambushed. Cessar ran over to help them. I was about to, when a young Kadanan girl slammed into me. Her chest was heaving. She couldn’t have been more than fifteen. Her gray eyes were full of fear.
“What’s your name?” I shouted over the noise.
“Kira.”
“Kira, I need you to be brave. That hole up ahead leads outside where we have help waiting. I want you to run with the group and not look back.”
“What about you?”
“I will be right behind you.”
She hesitated, then took off. I fully intended to make sure she made it out, but trouble was on my heels. A female shot her laser. I took a nose dive. I stayed on the pavement and quickly rolled toward her, knocking her feet from under her. I sprang up before she did. Her brown eyes glowed with fury. Before she could even think of her next move, I blasted her. She laid limp.
Someone from behind kicked my laser from my grasp and clocked me in the head. I went down on one knee. But I caught his foot before he hooved me in the ribs. I got to my feet and plowed one of my super kicks into his spine. He grabbed for the laser in his holster. My foot connected with the gun and sent it spiraling across the room.
A loud bang caught my attention. To my left, Nile was getting triple-teamed.
