Spook-a-interview with Mary Abshire

EM: Welcome to the My World Halloween Bash, Mary! It's wonderful to have you here! : )

1. What's your favorite scary movie?

Oh my…such a difficult question to answer. I love a lot of scary movies. The original Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, The Hills Have Eyes, Jeepers Creepers, The Exorcist 3, Kalifornia… What can I say? I like a lot.

EM: I love Jeepers Creepers. It's hilarious. But seriously, you see a man dumping a body down a pipe... Ya don't go back to check it out. Especially if the guy catches you watching him.

2. Was there a particular horror movie, or character that scared you when you were younger?

Yes, the Exorcist. I still can't watch it.

EM: I watched 20 mins when I was like eleven. It freaked me out to much, so I really don't blame you.

3. Which horror would you be afraid to be stuck in?

The Exorcist.

4. Who do you feel is the best horror villin? And why?

Mike Myers. You really don't see his face, just the bad ass killer behind the mask. He's sick, twisted, and a serial killer. Then again, that creature from Jeepers creepers is pretty evil and difficult to kill.

EM: Jeepers is creepy. He has 3 noses, and licks dirty school bus windows... *shudders* I'm sure they are doing or have already done, a 3rd Jeepers movie.

5. Why do you feel that vampires/werewolves/demons are so popular in both literature & film/tv?

Vampires - I think vamps became more popular after the Twilight movies came out. People have always loved them, such as myself, but it seems as if they gained popularity. And not just your typical bloodsucker, the different kinds of ones are popular.

Werewolves - I think the popularity of this creature comes and goes. They're curious creatures and usually change at the full moon, in most stories. They're big, strong, great bodies to look at, wild... I seem to recall Wolf and An American Werewolf In London gave rise to werewolves. Am I showing my age here?

Demons - Haven't seen many movies with demons. I think demons are more popular in books, and they aren't always evil. Sure, they are bad or have bad tendencies, but they aren't all thirsty for blood or anxious to steal your soul and run to hell. In movies, most demons are the evil ones, whereas in books, they can have a heart or soul and try to be good. Or, they could just make great villins.

6. Why did you decide to write a story about/featuring these particular being?

I've always loved vampires, but I didn't want to write solely about them. I wanted to write something different. So, after some thought, I came up with the idea of a half-demon who could send souls to hell. She runs into a vampire, a demon, and a werewolf. At different times, each one wants her and vice versa, but in the end she makes a choice.

7. Do you believe these beings actually existed once upon a time?

Demons-yes. Vamps-no. Werewolves-difficult to say.

8. What attracted you to the paranormal genre? Why do you write this particular genre?

Always had a curiosity about vampires and other dark and unusual creatures. Love to read and watch movies about them. Their strength and unique abilities stimulate my mind. Since I've always been interested in them, it seemed fitting to write about them.

9. Who is your favorite paranormal/horror writer & why?

I have many paranormal faces… Kelley Armstrong, Kim Harrison, Keri Arthur, Kerrelyn Sparks, Lynsay sands, J. Frost, J. Drake… so many. Each one has a different style and creative paranormal world.

10. Tell us about one of the most favorable scene you have written.

One of my favorite scenes is in Love Conquers All Evil, the 4th Soul Catcher novel. Jessie thinks the man she loves is dead and nearly gets killed. She ends up in hell and an angel negotiates for her.

Another favorite is the opening one in Fighting Evil when she is in training with Jeremy, the demon out to win her.

11. Out of all the characters you have created, who is your favorite and why?

Jeremy - he's so bad, naughty, and in your face.

12. If you could meet any fictional character, who would you meet and why?

Kisten from Kim Harrison's series. I love that character, dark, bad, yet in love with Rachel. Would also love to meet Clay from Kelley Armstrong's series. Bones from J. Frost's series would be interesting to meet. He's funny.

EM: Oh Clayton <3 I have the biggest crush on Clay from Kelley's otherworld series. Fell for him instantly.
Are you working on anything at the moment?

Currently, I'm working on a new paranormal romance series. I haven't decided on a title just yet, but the series is called Midnight Gardens. It's about living in paranormal suburbia.

EM: Ooo can't wait to hear more on that.

Do you have any current release?

My 4th Soul Catcher novel, Love Conquers All Evil came out in August. I have the sequel completed, but it needs serious revisions.

Blurb:

Welcome to arctic Alaska, home to humans, demons, and werewolves.

After months of moving and hiding from the VETOV, Drake and Jessie settle into a small Alaskan town. They soon discover a serial killer is on the loose and it’s a demon stealing good souls. As Jessie mingles with locals from the demon community and investigates the murders, she bumps into a werewolf she had hoped she would never see again. More trouble arises and Jessie reaches out to Alan, the Alpha she met in Arizona.

Together, Drake and Alan seek to eliminate the threat against Jessie, but removing the werewolf may come with a steep price for the Alpha.

In a matter of a few days, Jessie battles for survival, and her own soul, while maintaining a feverish love for Drake. Demons and werewolves won’t stop this half-demon soul catcher from sending souls to hell, or spending eternity with her noble.
