Genre: M/M Contemporary Romance
Publisher: DreamSpinner Press
Release Date: April 7 2020
Edition/Format: 1st Edition/Format ~ eBook & Print

Blurb/Synopsis:

Some moments happen once in a lifetime, and you have to catch them and hold on tight.

Arty Reynolds chased his dream to Broadway, but after his father is injured, he must return to the small fishing community where he grew up, at least until his dad is back on his feet.

Jamie Wilson fled his family farm but failed to achieve real independence. Arty is hiring for a trip on the gulf, and it’ll get Jamie one step closer to his goal.

Neither man plans to stay in Florida long-term, neither is looking for love, and they’re both blown away by the passion that sparks between them. But on a fishing boat, there’s little privacy to see where their feelings might lead. Passion builds like a storm until they reach land, where they also learn they share a common dream. The lives they both long for could line up perfectly, as long as they can weather the strain on their new romance when only one of them may get a chance at their dream.

Excerpt:

A lone figure walked slowly down the street. Arty leaned against the house, watching the well-built young man as he ambled toward the water. He should simply look away and go back to figuring out what he was going to do, but he couldn’t seem to look away. The man had wide shoulders and narrow hips, and when he passed under the streetlight, Arty got a good enough look that he almost whistled. Wavy brown hair, a butt encased in jeans that molded to him—this wasn’t someone he’d ever seen around here before. The guy stopped and turned and looked both ways, facing Arty for only a few seconds. Their gazes met and a flutter of instant attraction bubbled in Arty’s belly. He actually gasped at how strong it hit him. Arty watched the guy as he stopped and pulled something out of his pocket. It looked like a few bills, but he couldn’t be sure. He counted, then folded them and put the bills back in his pocket. The man’s shoulders rose and fell, and then he turned around, treating Arty to an amazing view of his chest and a glimpse of his young but beautiful face. Wow, what is this guy doing here? Arty blinked to make sure the man wasn’t some sort of imagining his lonely mind had cooked up. But no, he was real and looking back at him.
Arty saw beautiful people all the time. It was part of the business he was in, but this guy went beyond that. Arty even thought of taking the few steps through the yard to talk to him. If nothing else, he could find out what a guy like him was doing here, maybe see why he seemed so intent on counting a few bills. Shrugging, Arty needed a second to screw up his courage, then took a step forward. A dull thud from inside the house drew his attention, and he peeked inside to see what it was. When Arty turned back, the guy had gone back the way he’d come, his shoulders a little hunched and his stride less sure. The vision in tight denim passed behind the hedge, and Arty lost sight of him.
Arty ended up wandering down to the docks and out to where his dad’s boat sat bobbing in the surf. He climbed aboard and looked around. It needed some cleanup after the rains, but was otherwise in good shape. One thing his dad understood was that he needed to take good care of his equipment.

Blurb/Synopsis:

A Carlisle Deputies Novel

Undercover sheriff’s deputy Evan Whittaker is close to infiltrating a vicious local gang. He just needs to find an opening. Instead, he finds Wes Douglas, a web designer who is raising his irresponsible brother’s son. Wes agrees to help with a stakeout, but he pays the price when his home is destroyed in a shootout.

Evan’s always been a loner, but when he invites Wes into his home, living together feels right, and the two men only grow closer as they adapt to each other’s lives and rhythms. A future as a family looks brighter by the day, but all of that could collapse when Wes’s brother—and his connection to the drug dealers—crashes into the life they’re carefully building.

Excerpt:

“Yeah, but you need a diaper because you forgot to bring extras, right?” Evan winked. “I have a few in my trunk.” He slid out of the booth. “I’ll be right back.” He jogged out of the restaurant, and Wes was beginning to wonder what the heck this ruse was about. Evan was a decent guy, and Wes had seen his badge so he knew he was a real cop and not some guy trying to run a scam on him or something.
Greyson gnawed on his cookie and fussed, squirming in the high chair until Evan got back. Then he grinned and played keep-away with his cookie again, smiling each time Evan reached for it so he could pull it away.
Wes nearly swallowed his teeth when Evan handed him a diaper. “Okay, you have these in your trunk. Why? In case you arrest a baby for poop-and-run?”
Evan actually smiled at his joke. “No. I have a box of general things in the back, and a few diapers are in there. One of my friends works for children’s services, and he has a list of things that he wants us to carry so we can be prepared whenever we encounter children. There’s a stuffed bear in there and a small blanket.” He shrugged. “You never know.”
“Did you get the info you needed?” Wes asked as Evan began to eat, seemingly much more at ease than he had been.
“Yup.”
Wes ate his salad. He loved the ranch dressing they had here, and when he was done, Nadine cleared the dishes and brought his sandwich and some more dressing for the fries. He handed one of them to Greyson, who gummed it happily, grinning and sometimes waving his fry around.
“Does he always do that?”
Wes shrugged. “He isn’t really hungry, but he needs something to do, so a fry or two will keep him happy. And hopefully he won’t start fussing until it’s nearly time for us to go.” There were always limits to the amount of time he was capable of sitting relatively quietly. “I’d ask you about your work, but I don’t know if you want to talk about it.” It seemed strange with how cagey Evan was being.

Excerpt:

“Mom is thrilled beyond belief at being a grandma. Abey is talking a little more now, even if sometimes he doesn’t speak English. I’m waiting for the first time he calls her Grandma. At that point he’s going to be able to take over the world, and my mom is going to smile and let him do it. My dad is another story. He doesn’t understand how a son of his can be gay, especially one who played sports in high school and college. He’s met Abey, and I know it isn’t going to take too long and my dad isn’t going to care that Abey isn’t his biological grandson or that I adopted him from overseas and didn’t ask my dad’s opinion. All he’s going to see is that smile and those big eyes and that little boy asking Grampy to read him a story, and that is going to be it.” Alan rolled his eyes. “Dad and I don’t see eye to eye on a lot of things. But he’ll forget all that for Abey.”
“Yeah, I bet he will.” Tyler’s father was a pillar of his church and a local bigwig in the Republican Party. He was one of the people who organized rallies and got signatures on petitions. He was even a delegate to conventions. Alan had locked horns with him a few times. He respected him but didn’t agree with him.
The burgers came, and their conversation died a little. “When do you start at the station?”
“Monday. I wanted to stop in to see the chief, but I just didn’t have any time at all. And I figured that weekends are usually more thinly staffed because of time-off requests, so I didn’t want to bother him.”
“I can introduce you if you’d like,” Alan said. “He’s right over there.” He shifted his gaze and narrowed it. The man sat at a table with three other men, in his uniform, and as Alan watched, downed a gulp of beer. Alan groaned and made a note to mention to the mayor to check the schedule to make sure he wasn’t drinking on the job. Not that he was going to make it that easy on anyone to fire him, but if Alan could find something inappropriate on Chief Coburn, he’d love to bring it to the board’s attention, along with a resolution of termination.
“Drinking in uniform?” Tyler said, shaking his head. “Is that normal?”
“Let’s just say that he skirts what’s appropriate and has just enough backing on the council to keep himself secure.” Alan glanced over once again. “Come on. Let’s go introduce you.” He stood. “It will just take a minute.” That was about all he could stand to actually be in his presence.

Excerpt:

“What the fuck?” Scott swore next to him. “Everything is messed up.” He pulled back his hand, and Lee listened as each drawer in the chest was opened and closed. “They all are. Shit, I’m going to kill whoever did this.” Scott turned and shouted for Brent to come over.
“What’s going on?’ Brent asked in his deep but kind of soothing voice. He must have been signing as he spoke, because Scott answered right away.
“Everything in Lee’s drawer is messed up. He needs his tools in the right place so he can find them easily.”
Lee stood to the side, his arms around his own chest. It seemed stupid, but the thought that someone had been in his things and messed everything up on purpose just about killed him. He’d probably have felt better if they’d just stolen them. That was impersonal. But messing everything up—that was close, intimate. They knew exactly what would upset him most.
Before losing his sight five years earlier, Lee had been a real slob. His mom had been forever asking him to clean his room. But once he couldn’t see, he’d learned from James that he needed to be organized and precise if he was going to be able to navigate his blindness in a sighted world.
Scott moved to stand right next to him, then hugged him tightly. “Scott, can you and Lee spend some time fixing his tools? I’m going to get the car for you and drive it into the bay. We’ll try to figure out who did this. Was the box locked?”
“Yes. I saw Lee unlock it. Someone just tipped the entire box on its side to mess it up.” He was angry and as pissed off as Lee was. “The bastards.”
“I’ll get to the bottom of it, but I don’t understand,” Brent said.
Lee didn’t either. As far as he knew, he was friends with everyone at work. All of the other guys had always been nice to him. They even helped him and offered to guide him if Scott wasn’t there. He trusted all of them. That’s what really hurt.
“Okay,” Scott said, then started opening the drawers. He set to work, the tools banging against the metal dividers as Scott set them back in place.
Lee stood out of the way and let Scott help him. He could identify his tools by their feel, but he needed them in their own places if he was going to find them easily.

Excerpt:

“You’re not one of those guys, are you?”
“And what kind of guy would that be?” Darken asked.
Alex flipped back a strand of blond hair. “One of those macho-imbeciles who think that women belong behind the stove and not behind the steering wheel.”
Darken gave her a puzzled look that was almost convincing.
“I beg your pardon,” he said stiffly. “I didn’t mean to imply that there was anything wrong with your driving skills.”
Of course not. “What did you mean to imply, if I may ask?”
He sighed, impatiently. “If I recall it correctly, I just told you about the possible physical repercussions of my magic. At the moment you’re experiencing dizziness, perhaps even blurred vision. Your mouth feels dry and your skin raw. Your pupils are dilated.” He bent forward, peering into her face and she involuntarily took a step backward. Damn!
Max and Josy appeared around the car, notably dallying while getting into the car to be able to listen in.
“And your point is?”
Darken waved an irritated hand. “Haven’t you been listening at all? It’s going to get worse, a lot worse. What you are experiencing right now are just the first ripples. Especially the first time when someone is touched by a forfeit’s magic the effects are particularly dire. You’ll likely feel like you’re having a bad case of the chills, perhaps even suffer from shivering attacks and other … certain … physical symptoms.” His voice gained a slightly clipped edge at those last words, but she was too mad to pay it any attention.
Oh, so now he was getting all indignant because she wasn’t falling to pieces at his touch. Poor little woman wasn’t able to handle the touch of the big threatening predator. Males! He’d probably expected her to suffer some kind of nervous breakdown or something, getting all teary and whiny and swooning on his arm, begging him for smelling salts. Perhaps that was what most people did in her current circumstances. Well, she wouldn’t do him that favor, oh no! She’d suffered physical backlash of magic before and while it wasn’t a pleasant experience, a shapers’ body usually coped much better with it than other humans.
It was true, she did feel a bit shaky on her legs and there was a faint tingling sensation on her skin, but there was just no way she would grant him the triumph of backing down now. She’d have to grit her teeth and tough it out.
“Thanks a lot,” she said pointedly, “but I think I can manage.”
She yanked the door open—forcing him to quickly pull away his hand if he didn’t want his fingers to get squashed—and paused to look at him over the door casing. “Don’t worry, its a few hours’ drive to Gomorrah. You’ll come to your right.”
Before he could argue, she pushed past him, slipped into the driver’s seat and pulled the door shut behind her.
Well, chew on that, Mr. Smug.

Bryce wiped his forehead, removing his mask to take a breather. “What is it?” he pulled a face at the smell, then placed the mask back on.
“The device gave me a reading, huge amounts of sodium hypochlorite.”
“Laymen’s terms?” Bryce interrupted.
“Ammonia or bleach.”
Rodriquez called from behind him, “Someone might have tried to clean up the evidence.”
“Thank you captain obvious,” Aaron said, shooting him an impatient glare. “We’d worked that all out earlier–without a fancy machine.” He added that last bit for Whitmore.
“Fuck you!” Rodriguez flipped him the bird. Aaron pulled a face. “And risk catching something?”
Rodrigues clenched a fist, ready to leap at Aaron.
“Boys,” Bryce warned.
Aaron got back to this position at the edge of the hole as Rodriguez readied the drone, his hands and knees digging into the debris.
“You got it?” Aaron asked, lending a hand to take one side of the drone.
Rodriquez nodded. “Yeah, thanks.”  His voice a muffle through the mask. On his stomach he groaned, trying to balance the remote and the drone all at once. Aaron could see beads of sweat dotting his forehead. “Hey, I said I got it,” he insisted.
With the flick of a switch the drone came to life, and both agents steadily let go. The drone hovered, and Rodriquez rose to his knees.
“Patching you into the feed, Captain.”
With that, Aaron stood and made his way beside Bryce. They stared at a blank screen until the drone’s lights came on, illuminating the space. It was only then they realized how vast a room it truly was. Some kind of mechanical track ran along one side of the wall, and as the drone followed it, everyone held their breath.
Moments later, the figure at the far end wall became clear. The captain released a pent up breath. Aaron couldn't tear his gaze away from the screen. She was dead, evident by her pale, stiff features. Her hair hung dark and limp around her shoulders, with eyes wide open like she'd died facing her death head-on. Her mouth was agape, and he could almost hear the screams of terror.
Rodriquez stood back, his hands trembling as he tried to steady the drone on her face. “I’m gonna be sick.”
"It can't be." Bryce and Aaron stared at each other in horror. Aaron didn't have to reply, it was that bad, and they knew it, they'd both seen it, and it was as real as daylight.
“Rodriquez, are there any explosive devices down there.”
"No, sir."
“You need to get down there Anderson.” Bryce swallowed against the lump in his throat.
Aaron nodded, his shoulders set in determination as he pulled a headlamp from his gear belt. The shuffle of his feet through the debris and the kick of dust and pieces of cement was like the actions of a soldier coming out of the battlefield alone and hopeless. After slipping on some gloves, Aaron dropped feet first into the hole, caught the edge with both hands, took a breath and dropped down further into the darkness. With a crunch and a cloud of dust, Aaron landed on the hard ground below. Immediately, the heat and the humidity struck him. As he moved closer, he kept telling himself it couldn't be. But the closer he got to the body, the more evident it became.
His beam of light hit several objects. A crate approximately the size of a narrow coffin, broken and in pieces had been discarded next to a conveyer belt system. The stench of chemicals, mingled with the smell of rotting blood made him sick to his stomach. A few more steps closer and the smell clung to his skin. Finally, he faced her. Her naked skin glossy, pale and stiff. Her chest had been split wide open, ribs contorted so that he could take in the image the killer was trying to convey completely.
She looked like a doll without a heart.
Stepping even closer, he recognized her immediately, and his blood ran cold. Nausea bubbled up inside of him, trying to force its way out…

“Fine. But you stay out of the way and don’t say anything. You can listen.” James headed for the door, then strode as fast as he could out to his car. Mattias was already in the passenger seat before he got in, the bag on his lap. James buckled himself in and pulled out of the lot, heading back toward his home turf. Neither of them talked, and after a while, it put James on edge, which he didn’t like. “What are you thinking?”
“That I shouldn’t talk.”
James wanted to strangle him. “Are you always this annoying?” he asked as he pulled to a stop at a light on their way east.
“Maybe just a little more than usual. You tend to bring it out in me.” Mattias smiled and his eyes glistened. For a second it was like Mattias had been transformed into some ancient god. Maybe he was the reborn spirit of the mischievous god of wine or something. “I’m sorry I lifted your gun. I didn’t know you were going to take it that harshly, but you were so stoic and uptight.”
“I’m professional. I have a job to do, and I do it the very best I can. All the time.” There hadn’t been much room for anything or anyone else in his life. He was the job—he lived the job.
“I see,” Mattias said as he turned to him. For a second James felt naked, as though Mattias could see straight through him. He wanted to squirm but wasn’t going to show Mattias the weakness.
“What does that mean?” James snapped, then immediately wished he hadn’t.
“Look, I’m sorry, okay? I didn’t mean to take anything away from your professionalism when I lifted your gun. You challenged me, and I think I tried to get back at you a little. Believe it or not, I’m just as much a professional as you are.” Mattias hit him with a stare.
It was on the tip of his tongue to make a crack about Mattias’s “profession,” but James figured letting it go was probably going to be more productive. They needed to work together on this case, and fighting with each other wasn’t going to get the job done.
“I saw that glare.” There was teasing around the edges of Mattias’s voice, and James figured he was trying to ramp him up again. “I am a professional—I always have been. I never injured anyone or damaged things of value. I was a thief, yes. I got in and out quick and easy, and that was the end of it.”

Excerpt:

The memory of our last talk heats the air between us—about condoms and sex. And the way he walked in on me when I moaned his name. God. I’m not sure I can stand another talk like that. “I’m not naive, Liam. I know you took me in because I didn’t have anywhere else to go.”
A muscle in his jaw ticks. “That wasn’t exactly the reason. And even though I didn’t know you before I took custody, I’ve grown to care about you over the years. If I didn’t state it clearly enough, then the fault lies with me. I wasn’t raised to show… affection.”
I stare at him, incredulous. Affection? It’s a cold comfort to a girl who’s always wanted the surety of forever. And the word might as well be alien to a man like him. “I’m going to tour the country. The world. I’m leaving, Liam.”
He looks away. “Christ.”
Unease moves through me. “Did you really think I wouldn’t come back?”
“I don’t know why you would want to.”
“Because I care about you.” Liam is six feet of pure muscle and hard will. There’s no way someone like me could go up against him and win. Except that when I take a step closer, he tenses. Another step and he goes still as stone. It gives me a sense of power, enough that I take the final step. “I care about you even though you’re controlling.”
There’s only an inch between the ruffle of my blouse and the flat of his abs.
“You think I’m going to apologize for keeping you safe?” he mutters. “You think I give a damn that you’re mad at me as long as you’re in one piece? That’s the only thing that matters.”
“Because you think of me like a daughter?”
He shakes his head slowly, not breaking eye contact. “No.”
“No?” I whisper.
“When I walked in on you…” His voice is hoarse. “I didn’t think of you like a daughter.”
I should probably be horrified that he would think about me in any way other than family, except I’m the one who started it. I take a step closer, and there’s nowhere for him to go. He’s already backed up against the wall. This big, strong man who could probably make a whole army quake—or at least a battalion. And he’s cornered by me.
This close I can see the green of his eyes, so dark they’re almost emerald, flecked with gold. A scar bisects one dark eyebrow, probably a scar from something terrifying and deadly.
“How did you think of me?” I’m afraid to know the answer, but I’m even more terrified of never knowing. Of being a nameless, faceless body in that writhing crowd, hooking up with a stranger when the man I really want is standing right in front of me, inches away, his breath a feather-touch on my forehead.
A small shake of his head. “It’s not right.”
I’m not sure what right and wrong mean when it comes to us, but I know what it means for music. Someone can play a piece with perfect timing and notation. They can hit every single note, but it still won’t have passion. That part comes from inside. “Then be wrong with me. Don’t make me do it alone.”
I push up on my toes, pressing my lips against his in a blind, artless kiss. I’m off center of his mouth, kissing the corner. He stands still as a statue, letting me wobble on my heels, letting me fall against him, only my broken kiss to balance me.
Grief beats against my ribs. He’s going to make me do it alone. Of course he is. I’m always alone. A small sound escapes me. Loneliness. Pain. It vibrates against his mouth, sound made real.
He jolts as if I’ve shocked him. Something unspools inside him. I feel it in the inch of air between us. And then I feel it in my lips. He takes over the kiss with shocking possession, his hand behind my head, his body turning us so I’m against the wall. He looms in front of me, blocking out the view. There are no vinyl records on the wall, no bass thrumming through concrete and steel. There’s only him, only this. How is it possible that only a few minutes ago I felt powerful? I didn’t know what this would be. I couldn’t know the way I’d revel in surrender.
His tongue touches the seam of my lips, a pure electric sensation that makes me jump. I part my lips in surprise, pulling in the scent of him—man and earth, salt and sea. He tastes elemental. His tongue swipes the tender inside of my bottom lip. It’s more sensitive there than I could have imagined. I feel the slickness of the caress all the way in my core. My thighs clench together.
So careful. So wary. I touch my tongue against his. He’s the one who groans.
His hand fists in my hair, creating a delicious little ache. “Do you know what you’re doing to me?” he breathes, and I try to shake my head; it only makes him pull harder.
“Liam… I need…” It’s like the bedroom when he walked in on me, my hips rocking, mindless, hungry. Worse than that. My whole body is moving restlessly against him.
He tears himself away with a hard sound. Only an inch away. A rough tremor runs through him. It’s a small comfort, knowing that I’ve moved this man. Knowing how much control he has, knowing it’s eroded. But only a small comfort. He still leaves me panting against the door.
“I’m supposed to protect you,” he says, his voice taut with guilt.
