Blurb/Synopsis:
LIEUTENANT JACK DANIELS should have seen
the avalanche of trouble headed her way but events had dulled her edge and crumbled
her foundation of toughness. With the press and politicians all coming for her,
Jack begins to question whether she is really a cold blooded murderer or simply
losing her mind. Was it an officer involved shooting gone wrong? An honest
mistake? Or, something much, much worse?
There's one thing for sure, it has turned
the Chicago Police Department upside down, and Lieutenant Jack Daniels' life
along with it.

Excerpt:
FROM A YOUNG AGE, Marcus had despised the
dark. Not because he thought the boogieman or some other childish crap was
lurking in a corner, it was because of his mom. When she was twenty-three and
Marcus just eight, his mom dropped acid and some asshole told her that the only
real way to watch an eclipse was to stare at it. It was one in the afternoon
and Marcus had just arrived home from a split day at school when he heard his
mom scream, He ran to the vacant lot behind the projects and saw her crawling
through broken glass, screaming, 'I can't see!'
It was May 10, 1994 and his mom had stared
at the sun for a long time, so her eyes were ruined, and all she had was
darkness. Marcus really hated the dark.
His hands were flex-cuffed behind his back
and then to a pipe that ran up a concrete wall in some freezing ass basement.
At least that's what he thought it was. He didn't seem to have any sense of
time, and he wondered how long he had been there. It had to have been hours.
"Hey! I have to piss!"
No response.
Pulling his knees up and tried to stand. No
good.
Fuck. He felt the warm wet flood his
crotch.
Sometime later, the creak of a door woke
him. Looking up, he saw dim light coming from an open doorway, leading down
metal stairs. There was movement at the top and a single overhead bulb snapped
on.
A woman came down the stairs and for a
moment he thought it was Jack. With brown curls just touching her shoulders,
medium height and the same build, maybe you could mistake her at a glance. But
that's all.
He knew it was the woman who was driving
the SUV. The blond fake cop was creaking down the steps behind her. When they
got to the bottom, she pointed and he rolled a cart next to Marcus.
"I pissed myself. I told you I had to
go. Why are you doing this?"
"My name is Carla, this is
Michael."
Fuck, I'm dead, Marcus thought.
"Tell me about Jack Daniels."
Marcus pasted a nonchalant grin on his
face. "It's a bourbon."
Carla smiled and pushed Marcus' head back,
staring into his eyes. "Very amusing."
She let go of Marcus' head, and nodded at
the big guy.
Michael slipped on a pair of leather gloves
and punched Marcus in the nose, banging the back of his head on the concrete
wall. Sparks flashed in the back of his eyes and he nearly blacked out.
"Fuck! A cop. She's a cop."
"And you work for her."
He could feel blood dribbling down his
chin. "No, I—"
The big guy hit him in the nose again, and
Marcus felt it crunch.
"Ah, God . . . yeah, yes I sometimes
give her information."
"All you have to do to make Michael
stop is tell me what information you've given her."
"I haven't told her anything."
"You know how this goes. You tell me
what I want to know and we'll let you go."
"I know how this goes, and that's
bullshit. You're going to kill me."
Marcus looked at the bottom of the cart.
Paper towels, plastic sheeting, and half a dozen garbage bags. Knives and a
saw.

H. L. (Holly) LeRoy is an award winning,
American short story writer and novelist. Born in San Jose, California, LeRoy
currently resides in the Sierra Nevada Mountains with his family.
When J. A. Konrath approached me with the opportunity
to write in Lieutenant Jack Daniels’ world, I jumped at the chance. Since my
other works are in the mystery/thriller/action/adventure genres and tell the
stories of strong female protagonists confronting impossible situations, I knew
it was a perfect fit.
